In 2018, Xiang Yang Studio initiated the art project “Traveling Stools” by recycling the left over wood from making the installation “The Shore Where We Can Reach” which participating the 1st Pingyao International Sculpture Festival. Xiang Yang often uses wood from old Chinese furniture and buildings in his contemporary sculpture installations and the Traveling Stools project enabled the creation of a collection of small wooden stools (板凳) and the transformation of historic Chinese wooden materials into new functional pieces.
During two exhibitions that including “The Shore Where We Can Reach” and “Transfiguration House” in 2018, Xiang Yang Studio invited 50 individuals and groups from across the world to participate in this art project. We have given out 50 small wooden stools in total. Each of these stools has separated from the original installation and has become an independent art form. While traveling with the person who received the stool, each wooden stool has made a new relationship and interaction with human life, and each has transformed into a different and wider social existence.
